Record Immigration Drives an All-time Population High

The province’s population growth continues to set records thanks to the number of immigrants and people from other provinces who are choosing to live in Nova Scotia.

Based on estimates from Statistics Canada, since Oct. 1, 2018, Nova Scotia’s population grew by 12,339 residents, reaching a high of 976,768 as of Oct. 1, 2019. This is the fastest growth over a 12-month period since 1972 , at 1.28 per cent.

Nova Scotia’s population is up by 5,373 since July 1. The population increase this quarter includes 2,471 immigrants who settled in Nova Scotia. This is the highest quarterly immigration for records dating back to the Second World War. A positive trend continues with interprovincial migration bringing a net gain of 1,090 residents to Nova Scotia.

“This record-setting growth in population is strengthening our economy and our province,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister Karen Casey. “This growth is a testament to the great things happening in our communities.”

“These population numbers illustrate the positive impact immigration is having in our province. Immigration is a priority and is key to filling persistent labour needs and increasing our population,” said Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab.

Quick Facts:

• Nova Scotia’s net interprovincial migration was 1,090 in the last quarter (July 1 to Oct. 1), the 16^th consecutive quarter of positive net interprovincial migration
• in the last quarter (July 1 to Oct. 1), 2,471 immigrants arrived in the province. In the past 12 months (Oct. 1, 2018 to Oct. 1, 2019) 7,165 immigrants came to Nova Scotia.
